My thanks to Francesca for directing me to a blog posted today by Louisa Peacock of the Daily Telegraph. I had the pleasure of meeting Louisa after the 20 November House of Commons select committee hearing to which I gave evidence along with others.
I think it’s a well-written piece, but I would stress again that beliefs in gender-typical differences are not in any way an ‘official’ position of this campaign. I’ve responded to the piece (partly to clarify an important point about the Credit Suisse report cited in the piece), and I’ve emailed Louisa to say while I think it’s a good article, I have to disagree with the final paragraph:
But perhaps it is about time those campaigning for more women on boards switched the debate from the pure “numbers game”, focusing on how many women have or haven’t been recruited to the top, to what UK companies are actually doing to help get them there.
I asked Louisa, if more women on boards don’t improve the financial performance of companies, why should UK companies ‘help them get there’? The only justification I could see would be a left-wing ideological one, which seems odd from a paper generally regarded as right-of-centre. On gender matters – unlike the Daily Mail – the Telegraph very seldom prints right-of-centre perspectives. And pieces on gender matters always seem to be written by women. Isn’t it about time 50% of such articles were written by men?
